As part of our continued effort to enhance the user experience across Buildertrend, we’ve made several updates designed to improve consistency, protect your data, and pave the way for even more enhancements.

These changes impact how users enter and view information across Buildertrend, introducing a more intentional and predictable workflow. By aligning the layout and behavior of Buildertrend features, users can expect a more efficient experience with fewer surprises, especially helpful for new team members or those working across multiple features.

Here’s what’s new:

View and Edit States

If you’ve noticed a few buttons moving around, or an extra click when editing something, that’s because we’re gradually rolling out view and edit states across Buildertrend.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • When you create new items, they’ll open in edit mode so you can create or input data quickly.

  • After items have been sent, approved, or completed, they’ll open in view mode to ensure no accidental changes are made.

  • To make changes, just click on the Edit icon.

Example: Daily Logs

❌ Old Workflow

Once a Daily Log was selected, all actions were visible the data was was editable.

Updated Workflow

When you select a Daily Log, it opens a view state for you to review its content. Click the pencil icon to enter the edit state and make any necessary changes.

You can also bypass the view state by selecting Edit from the ellipsis menu next to any Daily Log.

What is the value of view and edit states?

This shift isn’t just about moving buttons , it’s about creating a more reliable and intuitive experience, helps prevent mistakes, and unlocks future improvements like audit trails, versioning, and smarter automation.

Action Buttons

We’ve standardized and simplified action buttons across the platform. Instead of seeing multiple buttons like “Save,” “Save & Close,” and “Save & Release,” you’ll now interact with a single Save button with a dropdown for additional options.

We’ve also moved less frequently used actions into an ellipsis menu to reduce screen clutter. In addition, we’ve updated terminology to be more intuitive:

  • Save is the primary action when in edit mode

  • Send replaces "Release"

  • Recall replaces "Unrelease"

Example: Change Orders

New Action Buttons

What is the value of updated action buttons?

These changes create a more consistent and predictable experience across features. By reducing the number of visible buttons and unifying button behavior, you can complete tasks with greater clarity and fewer clicks. It also makes onboarding easier for new team members and supports a cleaner, more focused workflow.

Statuses

We’ve updated feature status labels to better reflect the current status of feature entity and to align with recent button terminology changes. The new status terms are:

  • "Pending / Unreleased" is now Not sent / Pending

  • "Pending / Released" is now Sent / Pending

  • "Unreleased" is now Recalled

These updated labels provide a more intuitive understanding of what’s happening behind the scenes and who needs to take action.

What is the value of updated statuses?

Clearer status indicators help reduce confusion and improve communication across your team. With more descriptive, action-based language, users can quickly see where something stands, whether it still needs review, has been sent for approval, or was pulled back for changes. This supports more efficient collaboration and smoother project workflows.

Full-Page Views

Some features that previously opened in a popup modal will now open in a full-page view. While modals are ideal for quick, simple tasks, full-page views are better suited for more detailed or collaborative workflows. This shift is part of a broader effort to improve usability and efficiency as project complexity increases.

Example: Job Details

❌ Old Experience: Modal

New Experience: Full-Page

What is the value of a full-page experience?

Tackle More Complex Work

Pages support complex workflows like reviewing attachments, checking financial impact, or managing multiple statuses without stacking more modals.

Navigate with More Control

Full-page views improve how you navigate, organize, and return to your work. They make it easier to:

  • Link directly to specific tasks

  • Bookmark pages for quick access

  • Pick up right where you left off

Build Confidence with a More Consistent, Responsive Experience

Moving away from cramped modals and into full-page flows supports a more predictable experience, including on mobile and smaller screens.

Consistency across workflows makes the platform easier to learn, easier to teach, and easier to trust. Whether you're reviewing a proposal, creating a change order, or managing your to dos, you’ll start to see familiar patterns that help your team move faster with fewer mistakes.

We recognize these shifts might feel a bit more “clicky” at first. Returning to a list or jumping back into edit mode may take an extra step.

To help, we’re actively improving back navigation, adding hotkeys, and exploring in-place editing to streamline the experience.
